The City of Lubbock Vector Control Department is responsible for surveying, monitoring and controlling mosquito populations within the City of Lubbock and Lubbock County.
At least 27 mosquito species are found in Lubbock County and the surrounding South Plains area; mosquito species of concern are seasonal in their activity. Some of these species are potential transmitters (vectors) of human and animal disease-causing pathogens. The main mosquito-borne disease threats known to occur in this area are West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis Encephalitis (SLEV). The primary focus of vector control is the surveillance and control of these seasonal threats to public health. Source reduction, such as treatment of standing water within the extensive playa lakes system, and community education are the primary means for disease prevention and vector control in the community.
To Request Vector Control Services:
The community can provide a valuable service by reporting mosquito problems in specific areas. Service requests are helpful in pinpointing "hotspots" for mosquito activity. Having accurate information aids in directing surveillance and control efforts to a reported area. This helps the program direct surveillance and control efforts to these areas. Citizens can submit a service request by clicking one of the links below:
- To report biting adult mosquitoes - click here.
- To report a suspected mosquito breeding site (source) - click here.
- To submit an advance request for a public event - click here.
