City of Lubbock Animal Services (LAS) Warns Public of Pet Adoption Scam

Lubbock Animal Services (LAS) has received multiple reports of individuals falsely identifying themselves as City of Lubbock Animal Services staff and attempting to adopt out dogs around the Lubbock community in order to claim a large "adoption fee" for themselves.

To help citizens spot scammers, LAS has provided the following list of things it will NEVER do:

  • Charge more than $30 for an adoption fee ($30 is the current standard fee at LAS)
  • Attempt to perform a "home visit" prior to adopting out an animal
  • Attempt to collect a "pet deposit" for an animal
  • Threaten euthanasia of an animal unless it's adopted immediately
  • Direct message individuals on social media
  • Solicit money or donations via phone calls or direct messages
  • Inquire about annual household income for adoption eligibility
  • Host adoption events with dogs off leash or not properly restrained (City of Lubbock has a leash policy and all dogs must stay restrained. None of our animals will ever be unrestrained while with an employee)

All LAS employees have official City of Lubbock badges to identify themselves. If in doubt about the legitimacy of any person claiming to be employed by Lubbock Animal Services, you can always request to see their badge, or call LAS directly at 806-775-2057 and request confirmation.
