How to Obtain a Library Card
Any resident of the City of Lubbock, Lubbock County, or the following counties, may obtain a Lubbock Public Library Card: Andrews, Bailey, Borden, Cochran, Crane, Crosby, Dawson, Dickens, Ector, Floyd, Gaines, Garza, Glasscock, Hale, Hockley, Howard, King, Lamb, Loving, Lynn, Martin, Midland, Motley, Terry, Upton, Ward, Winkler, Yoakum. You may visit any library location and fill out an application.
- Card Issued on Site: You may obtain a library card at the time you apply if you present a valid driver's license or other photo identification card. If the address on your ID card is not current, please bring additional proof of address such as a checkbook or a piece of mail postmarked within the last three months.
- Card Issued by Mail: If you have a valid ID, but do not have proof of address, we will mail the card to you. As a one-time courtesy you may check out two items on the day you create your account. Once you receive the card by mail you will have full borrowing privileges.
- Library Card Application: Bring completed form to any of our four locations.
Checking Out Materials
You can check out up to 50 items on your card. Limits on individual item types are listed below.
- Audiobooks: Audiobooks check out for three weeks and can be renewed twice.
- Books: Books (other than bestsellers) check out for three weeks and can be renewed twice.
- Bestsellers: Bestsellers check out for three weeks with no renewals.
- DVDs: DVDs check out for seven days and can be renewed once. You may check out up to 5 DVDs, with a limit of two new releases and two television series at a time. New releases may not be renewed or placed on hold.
- Magazines: Back issues of magazines check out for 7 days with no renewals. Current issues are for in-library use only and do not check out. Magazines should be returned inside the library, not in the outside book drops.
- Electronic Materials: The library has an extensive collection of e-books and e-audiobooks. These can be accessed through the Libby app on your smartphone or Kindle device. These items check out for 2 weeks. To access our virtual library, please click here.
Late Fees
As of October 1, 2022 Lubbock Public Libraries are fine free!
DVDs and technology will still accrue late fees, but all other materials do not.
Renewing Library Materials
Starting September 19, 2022 books and audiobooks will be automatically renewed. If your book or audiobook is not turned in by the due date, it will be automatically renewed up to 2 times as long as there are no holds for that item. This does not include Bestsellers. You will receive an email if your item has been successfully renewed automatically.
All other library items can be renewed online, in-person, or over the phone. To renew items online you will need your User ID (library card number) and your PIN number, which can be obtained at the circulation desk or by called the library.
Can I use my library card at all the Lubbock Public Libraries?
Yes, your library card is valid for use at any of the four Lubbock Public Libraries.
