New Flood Score Rating Means Insurance Savings

Start Date: June 11, 2014, 10:43 AM

A better flood rating score means some Lubbock homeowners will receive a bigger discount on their flood insurance. The City of Lubbock was recently rated a Class 7 City under the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS). A Class 7 rating means a 15% discount on flood insurance for homeowners required to carry flood insurance on structures in flood hazard areas. The discount became effective May 1, 2014.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) manages the National Flood Insurance Program. NFIP CRS is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that help citizens prevent or reduce flood losses. Participating cities are ranked in Class 1-9 based on points received for 18 activities. The City of Lubbock Stormwater Department achieved the Class 7 rating by creating higher design standards for new buildings, improving stormwater management, providing easier access to maps, and better monitoring of playa lakes.
