February 3, 2014 marks the 55th anniversary of the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper). This date has been affectionately given the name The Day The Music Died by the Buddy Holly Center after a lyric in the Don McLean song, "American Pie," that references the deaths of these rock and roll musicians.
The Buddy Holly Center is honored to invite the public to The Day The Music Died, an event celebrating the life and legacy of Buddy Holly. Patrons are invited to the Center FREE of charge on Monday, February 3rd from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
The events on Monday, February 3rd include free admission to the Center and the “J.I. Allison House” throughout the day’s event, and screenings of the movie “The Buddy I Knew” by Larry Holley. There will also be a free activity for all ages available in the Education Space and a guided tour by the Museum Curator, Jacqueline Bober.
The Buddy Holly Center will have three exhibitions on display. The Buddy Holly Gallery features a permanent exhibit on the life and music of Buddy Holly. The Foyer Gallery features West Texas Guitar, an exhibition highlighting the guitars of notable musicians and songwriters who originated from the West Texas region. The Fine Arts Gallery features the exhibition, Texas Works, which focuses on the creative talents of printmakers, Catherine Prose, John Hitchcock and Katherine Liontas-Warren.
On The Day The Music Died, the Center staff places a spray of yellow roses on Buddy’s grave, located at the City of Lubbock Cemetery at 31st Street and Teak Avenue.
