Right of Way and Political/Election Signs

Start Date: January 23, 2014, 11:27 AM
End Date: February 09, 2014, 12:00 AM

The City of Lubbock Code Administration Department would like to remind political campaigns of the rules regarding political and election sign placement and right of way.

Due to the traffic hazard and liability created by obstructing a driver’s view, signs are prohibited in the right of way. Signs placed in the right of way are subject to removal by Code Inspectors.

“Public right of way typically extends to the back of the sidewalk,” explains Code Administration Director Stuart Walker. “If there is no sidewalk, a good rule of thumb is 15 feet from the curb or behind utility poles.”

In addition to being prohibited in the right of way, signs may not be attached to utility poles or fences.

Stuart encourages anyone running for office with questions regarding sign placement to call Code Administration at 775-2111.
