The Communications Center is under the direction of the Communications Center Manager, who reports directly to the Assistant Chief of Police of Administration. There is an Assistant Communications Center Manager and four Shift Supervisors. The Department has one Administrative Assistant.
The Center is authorized 37 Dispatchers. Public Safety Dispatcher (I) is the entry level position for the Communications Division. When training, experience, and performance are met by a Public Safety Dispatcher (I), they have the opportunity to advance to a Public Safety Dispatcher (II) position and will assume additional duties as a Lead Dispatcher and a Communications Training Officer. Communications is a 24/7 operation. There are two twelve-hour shifts: 0600-1800 (6 a.m.-6 p.m.); 1800-0600 (6 p.m.-6 a.m.). We have an annual operating budget of over $2,000,000.00.
The Communications Center answers calls and dispatches Police for the City of Lubbock. In addition, the Lubbock Police Department's Communications Center is the primary answering point for all 9-1-1 calls within the city limits, including Fire and EMS. Calls for Fire and EMS are transferred to their respective dispatch centers. Overall, the Communications Center handles approximately 35,000 phone calls per month, resulting in over 22,500 police call sheets per month.
