Atmos Energy, The United FamilyTM and Happy State Bank have provided the initial donations for "The McCartney Oak" that will be planted in the Buddy and Maria Elena Holly Plaza, home of the Buddy Holly statue and West Texas Walk of Fame at 19th & Crickets Avenue. The effort is being undertaken to commemorate the historic appearance of music legend Sir Paul McCartney here on October 2nd at the United Supermarkets Arena.
The Lubbock concert is one of only two Texas stops on Sir Paul McCartney's "Out There" tour. McCartney is one of two surviving members of The Beatles and he has long professed the impact of Holly on The Beatles' music. "The McCartney Oak" is intended to pay homage to Holly's influence and McCartney's historic stop in the Hub City. Given proper care, the tree - like the legacies of McCartney and Buddy Holly - will "Not Fade Away."
The Buddy Holly Center appreciates the generous support of the community during this project. Donations are needed for irrigation, a bench, a plaque, a concrete walkway and a seating area around the tree. If you are interested in donating please contact the Buddy Holly Center at 1801 Crickets Avenue or call the Center at (806)775-3560. You may also contact the Happy State Bank located at 8001 Quaker Avenue, Suite N and 4402 19th Street or call the Bank at (806) 796-BANK (2265).
